(Updated 1:50 p.m.) At least five people were reported killed while several others were hurt in a freak accident involving a dump truck that went out of control and crashed into a police outpost in Taytay, Rizal Thursday noon.
In an interview on dzBB, Taytay police head Superintendent Art Masungsong said the initial five fatalities were “a woman and four male, one of them was a minor.”
He also said a policeman at the outpost, initially identified as PO1 Miranda, had regained consciousness.
The incident occurred at Dolores village in the Tikling area in Taytay, according to a report by radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen.
Rescuers had to use a hydraulic cutter to pull out some of the victims’ bodies, the report said.
Many of the victims were buried in soil carried by the dump truck which turned over and spilled its load of soil, the report added.
“May nasaktan, initially isang tricycle ng estudyante, mga kabataan, papasok sa Taytay Elementary School, nahagip ng trak bago siya nabangga sa outpost,” said Dolores village councilor Lester Martirez.
Martirez said the tricycle was overloaded with at least 16 students.
A sketchy initial investigation showed the brakes failed and the dump truck went out of control, hitting several vehicles before ramming the police outpost.
Only last Dec. 22, at least eight people were killed after a truck slammed into a row of houses along Sumulong Highway in Antipolo City, also in Rizal province.
In the December incident, some of the structures that were damaged included a carinderia (eatery) and a store. — LBG, GMA News : Angono Dream News : Manda Icasiano
