The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Angono, Rizal recently honored Rizal News Online editor Richard R. Gappi with “Dangal ng Bayan Award” for literatre, arts and journalism.The confirmation was made after the council’s session yesterday, July 13, in which Councilor Januver Tiamson presented for approval the nominees in the annual search for Angono’s outstanding citizens.
Ten (10) other awardees will be honored on August 19 during the 74thfounding day celebration of Angono.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Angono is composed of Vice-Mayor Ronald Patrick Rubin as presiding officer and councilors Aristito V. Gil, Jeanine M. Rivera, Lucio D. San Pedro Jr., Ginoclem Miranda, Rodrigo S. Reyes, Januver Tiamson, Bernie Blanco Guir, Angelito M. Manalaysay, Capt. Jose V. Calderon and SK Chairman Mico C. Calderon.
Gappi has been writing for for almost 20 years. He is a graduate of University of the Philippines Diliman. He took up Bachelor of Arts (AB) Philippine Studies (major in Political Science and History) and earned units in Master of Arts (MA) Creative Writing (major in Poetry).
He is a former editor of the Philippine Collegian, the official newspaper of the students of UP Diliman; former editor-in-chief of Rizal Times and Manila East Watch, which used to be a weekly newspaper in Rizal province published by Mr. Avelino Zapanta, former president of Philippine Airlines and an outstanding Rizalenyo awardee; and at present, editor-in-chief of Rizal News Online (
Gappi is a poet, an artist, netizen journalist, cultural worker, and a teacher of Creative Writing and Mass Communication.
As an artist, he is the founding president and now serves as the adviser of the Neo-Angono Artists Collective, the third generation of artists in Angono whose niche in the local and national art scene is the group’s annual Public Art Festival held alongside the celebration of town fiesta and “Higante Festival” in November.
As a cultural worker and head of the said artist group, he served as the Project Director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ National Arts Month project/celebration titled Philippine Visual Arts Festival 2012: The Rizal Experience (PVAF 2012: TRE) held on February 17-21, 2012 in Angono and Rizal province.
He was also the Project Director of the “ASEAN Art Conference and Feasibility Workshop on Angono as a Creative City” sponsored by Japan Foundation held in Angono on November 17-24, 2009. He also participated and delivered a performative lecture at “Locus Redux: Speaking Across Contexts, Learnings and Negotiations in Writing and Teaching on Art,” an ASIAN art conference and forum sponsored by Japan Foundation, PANANAW ng Sining Bayan, Kalaw Ledesma Foundation, and Lopez Memorial Museum held in Makati City Philippines on May 19-21, 2012.
Gappi also serves as Vice-President of the Angono Council for Tradition, Culture and the Arts headed by Prof. Agripino “Nonoy” Diestro. The group is an amalgamation of various artists practicing different artistic and creative genre in Angono.
As a poet, Gappi is the founding president of the Angono Tres-Siete (3/7) Poetry Society, a group of writers and poets in the province and based in Angono, Rizal. The group has released five (5) chapbooks of poetry, in which Gappi served as editor.
Gappi was also a Fellow for Poetry at the 1996 University of the Philippines National Writer’s Workshop held in UP Baguio; New Author Series awardee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts; writer/researcher of the UP Diksyonaryo ng Wikang Filipino; and has won 3rd prize in the Poet of the Year contest by Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, an agency attached to the Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines. His first book of poems, titled “Sala sa Saysay,” was published by NCCA in 2002. At present, he has more than 300 poems ready for publication.
As a netizen journalist, Gappi is the editor-in-chief (Rizal News Online), the only online newspaper in the province featuring the latest news, videos and stories in Angono, Provincial Capitol, and Rizal province and which has more than 360,000 readers/site visitors from 134 countries in the world.
He started as campus writer in UP Diliman by being a probationary    writer and eventually became staff member and editor of the Philippine Collegian, the official publication of UP students. He is a member of the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines and has travelled in different parts of the country to serve as guest and resource speaker in various poetry and journalism workshops.
At present, he is the Community Affairs Assistant Officer II, Media Relations Officer, in-charge of the Artists Affairs of the Municipality of Angono, and member of Rizal Information Officers League
